Our Story
Hey, I’m Jono. Welcome to Freedom Fit Outs.
My story kicked off the day I finished my carpentry apprenticeship and decided to turn the back of my old 2002 Troopy into a home on wheels. That first build wasn’t perfect, but it lit a spark. I travelled full-time for years, wandering Australia and poking my head into every traveller’s setup I came across — asking questions, learning what actually works on the road, and seeing how a tiny space can feel completely different with the right design.
What began as a few weekend projects for mates slowly turned into something bigger. Freedom Fit Outs grew out of the same feeling I chased on the road: the freedom to go anywhere, live simply, and feel at home no matter where you park up.
Now settled in the Northern Rivers, I create van spaces built for real life. Not just Instagram photos — real adventures, real dirt roads, real mornings waking up somewhere new. Every fit out is designed to be practical, comfortable, and built to last.
I keep things personal. If you want to drop into the workshop, call with a random question, or send me a rough sketch at midnight, I’m here for it. I love seeing an idea turn into a space someone can actually live in.
Whether it’s a full fit out or a simple upgrade, every project gets the same care, craftsmanship, and attention to detail — because the little things are what make a van feel like home.
The Process
We keep the fit out process as simple and stress-free as possible, working from our workshop in Cabarita - just 20 minutes south of the Gold Coast and half an hour north of Byron Bay.
If you’re local, feel free to drop into the workshop for a chat, give us a call, or send an email to get things moving. We’ll walk through your ideas together and refine the design so it suits exactly how you want to live on the road.
Whether you’re after a full fit out or a small upgrade, we’ll craft a space that truly works for you. You’ll get regular updates throughout the build - though we always keep a little something up our sleeve for the final reveal.
Some things to consider when building your dream van!
Buying a used van?
Remember these tips.
Buying a used van is a smart way to start your van life adventure or upgrade your work vehicle without overspending. But not all vans are road-trip ready—here’s what to look for to avoid headaches down the track.
-
Rust is a pretty common issue, especially in vans that have spent time near the coast. Look underneath, around wheel arches, and along door sills. Surface rust can be fixed, but deep corrosion could mean you’re a bit more strife.
-
A well-maintained van should have a record of regular servicing. Ask for receipts and check for major repairs like engine or transmission work. A missing service history? In dating talk… That’s a red flag.
-
Take the van for a proper test drive. Listen for any funky noises, watch for warning lights, and make sure it shifts smoothly—especially if it’s an auto.
-
Water leaks can lead to costly damage. Inspect around windows, doors, and the roof. Inside, watch for mould or water stains—or any signs that moisture has been a problem.
-
If you’re planning a van conversion, good wiring is key. Test all lights, indicators, and existing electrical components. If the van’s been converted before, make sure the wiring is safe and up to standard.
