A small team, built in house

Hey, I'm Jono

My story kicked off the day I finished my carpentry apprenticeship and decided to turn the back of my old 2002 Troopy into a home on wheels. Now settled in the Northern Rivers, I create van spaces built for real life - real adventures, real dirt roads, real mornings waking up somewhere new.

Fully insulated floor to ceiling, with VJ wall lining, a Tasmanian Oak ceiling and timber lino flooring. Custom white cabinetry and solid Tassie Oak benchtops keep it bright and easy to look after.
A custom workspace with a chair and slide-out table sits at the centre of the layout, so it works as an office by day and packs away at night. Three heavy duty drawers under the bed and overhead cupboards handle the storage.
The kitchen has a large black sink with a tiled splashback, an 85L fridge and as much water storage as the van could carry.
Airflow and lighting come from a roof fan, a Sirocco fan and interior lights through the van.
The off grid set up
A 315Ah lithium battery with a 2000W inverter and a 40A DC-DC charger, so the van tops up while driving and holds enough to sit still for a few days.
A 200W solar panel handles day-to-day charging, with 240V shore power when a powered site makes more sense, and 240V and USB-C outlets inside.

The fit out
Designed for long-term adventure and off-grid living, this 2025 Mercedes-Benz AWD LWB Sprinter has been transformed into a premium touring home with a focus on quality materials, functionality and timeless design.
The van is fully insulated with cork and wool for warmth and quiet, with stretch carpet over the exposed metalwork. Lino flooring, white VJ panelling and a handcrafted Tassie Oak ceiling give the interior a warm, natural feel, finished with solid Tassie Oak benchtops and cabinetry built for the space.
A custom partition wall with overhead cab storage opens up the living area, and a HappiJac electric bed system lifts out of the way when it is not in use. Below it sits an adjustable table, black tapware and handles, and a kitchen set up for comfortable off-grid cooking.
The bathroom is purpose-built, with a custom shower tray, wet area wall panelling, black fittings and a full water system with digital water and waste monitoring.
Outside, the van carries a Weldbeat rear wheel carrier and ladder, roof platform, awning, side window, roof ventilation and a large skylight.
With 110L of fresh water and 65L of grey, it is set up for long stretches away from town.
The off grid set up
Power comes from a Victron 24V system with 600Ah of battery, a 3000W inverter and Victron monitoring, so everything can be checked and managed from the one display.
240V shore power lets you plug in at powered sites, and USB-C fast charging and 240V outlets are spread through the van.
Climate is handled by Sirocco fans, a Truma air conditioner and a Truma Combi D6 diesel unit for hot water and heating.
In the kitchen there is a 130L Bushman fridge and a 35L Bushman drawer freezer.

The fit out
Insulated with cork and wool, then lined in Tasmanian Oak across the ceiling and walls with solid Tassie Oak benchtops over custom black cabinetry.
A HappiJac electric bed lift sits at the rear, so the bed drops down at night and lifts out of the way through the day. Underneath is a board bunk and a large slide-out drawer, and an adjustable table swings across to double as a desk.
The kitchen has a black sink and tap with a 130L Bushman fridge, fed from a 96L underslung water tank and a 10L water heater. A shower sits beside the sliding door.
Outside it carries a Wedgetail roof platform, an awning, roof ventilation, side windows, and a rear ladder, wheel carrier and cargo carrier.
The off grid set up
A 12V system with a 345Ah lithium battery, an Enerdrive 2000W inverter charger and a 50A DC-DC charger with built-in MPPT, monitored by a Victron BMV-712.
Two 200W solar panels on the roof do the charging, with an external plug for a solar blanket on longer stays, and 240V shore power for powered sites.
Black downlights run through the Tassie Oak ceiling on dimmers, with reading lights either side, and a Starlink Mini on the roof rack for working from anywhere.

How a build runs

01
Get in touch
Call, email or drop in. Tell us about your van and how you want to live on the road. No obligation at this stage.
02
Design and quote
We walk through your ideas together and refine the layout until it suits exactly how you travel, then quote the build.
03
Lock in your slot
A small deposit secures your build slot in the calendar. We only run a few builds at a time, so dates are booked ahead.
04
The build
Smaller vans take three to five weeks, larger builds eight to twelve. You get weekly updates, and if you're local you're welcome to pop in anytime.
05
The reveal
We always keep a little something up our sleeve for handover day. Then it's yours, keys in hand and a lifetime of adventures ahead.

Some things to consider when building your dream van

Usage plan
How do you see yourself using your van? Will it be your full-time home, a weekend escape, or an occasional road-trip companion? Your setup should match your lifestyle, whether that means a compact, minimalist layout or a fully equipped home on wheels.
Sleeping arrangements
Who's coming along for the ride? Whether it's just you, a partner, or a whole crew, your sleeping setup needs to work for everyone. From bunk beds for the kids to a cosy double for two, plan for comfort and practicality.
Bed preferences
Do you want a fixed bed, or are you happy converting it each day? A permanent bed offers instant comfort, while a convertible setup saves space for daytime use. Think about what will work best for your routine.
Storage solutions
What are you bringing with you? Clothes, gear, surfboards, or even a mountain bike? Smart storage is key to keeping your van organized. Plan for everything you need without cluttering your space.
Natural light
Windows can completely change the feel of your van. More light makes the space feel bigger and more inviting, but you might also want privacy or insulation. Consider adding extra windows or keeping existing ones clear.
Power needs
How much power will you need? If you're running lights, charging devices, or using a fridge, a 12V setup might be enough. If you're working remotely or need extra appliances, you may want a 240V system. Plan ahead so you're never caught without power.
Seating arrangements
Will you need a dedicated spot to sit and work, eat, or just relax? A built-in table and seating area can make all the difference, especially for those who spend a lot of time inside their van.
Cooking facilities
Are you cooking indoors or taking it outside? A built-in kitchen with a stove, fridge, and sink makes indoor cooking easy. Prefer open-air meals? A slide-out kitchen gives you the best of both worlds.

Buying a used van? Remember these tips.

Buying a used van is a smart way to start your van life adventure or upgrade your work vehicle without overspending. But not all vans are road-trip ready, here's what to look for to avoid headaches down the track.
Check for rust
Rust is a pretty common issue, especially in vans that have spent time near the coast. Look underneath, around wheel arches, and along door sills. Surface rust can be fixed, but deep corrosion could mean you're a bit more strife.
Review the service history
A well-maintained van should have a record of regular servicing. Ask for receipts and check for major repairs like engine or transmission work. A missing service history? In dating talk… That's a red flag.
Test the engine and transmission
Take the van for a proper test drive. Listen for any funky noises, watch for warning lights, and make sure it shifts smoothly, especially if it's an auto.
Check for leaks
Water leaks can lead to costly damage. Inspect around windows, doors, and the roof. Inside, watch for mould or water stains, or any signs that moisture has been a problem.
Inspect the electrical system
If you're planning a van conversion, good wiring is key. Test all lights, indicators, and existing electrical components. If the van's been converted before, make sure the wiring is safe and up to standard.
Our story

Hey, I'm Jono. Welcome to Freedom Fit Outs.

My story kicked off the day I finished my carpentry apprenticeship and decided to turn the back of my old 2002 Troopy into a home on wheels. That first build wasn't perfect, but it lit a spark. I travelled full-time for years, wandering Australia and poking my head into every traveller's setup I came across - asking questions, learning what actually works on the road, and seeing how a tiny space can feel completely different with the right design.
What began as a few weekend projects for mates slowly turned into something bigger. Freedom Fit Outs grew out of the same feeling I chased on the road: the freedom to go anywhere, live simply, and feel at home no matter where you park up.
Now settled in the Northern Rivers, I create van spaces built for real life. Not just Instagram photos - real adventures, real dirt roads, real mornings waking up somewhere new. Every fit out is designed to be practical, comfortable, and built to last.
I keep things personal. If you want to drop into the workshop, call with a random question, or send me a rough sketch at midnight, I'm here for it. I love seeing an idea turn into a space someone can actually live in.
Whether it's a full fit out or a simple upgrade, every project gets the same care, craftsmanship, and attention to detail - because the little things are what make a van feel like home.
